The IUPAP Magnetism Award and Néel medal are presented every three years, at the International Magnetism Conference, to a scientist in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the field of magnetism. The Award is sponsored by Elsevier Science B. V., Amsterdam. The IUPAP Young Scientist medals in the field of magnetism are presented every three years at the International Magnetism Conference. The medals are sponsored by IUPAP. The laureates of the IUPAP magnetism prizes to be given during ICM 2009 are the following:
Magnetism Award and Néel Medal 2009
Stuart S.P. Parkin IBM Almaden Research Center, San Jose, California and IBM-Stanford Spintronic Science and Applications Center, USA ”For the discovery of the long range oscillatory exchange interactions in layered transition metal magnetic structures leading to novel spin-engineered materials and devices and enabling more advanced storage and memory technologies.”
Young scientist medals in the field of magnetism 2009 (3 winners)
Sergio O. Valenzuela Departament de Fica, Campus de la UAB, Universitat Automa de Barcelona, Spain
”For significant contributions to nonlocal spin-detection methods, including the first electronic detection of the spin Hall effect and of pure spin currents.”
Eiji Saitoh Department of Applied Physics and Physico-Informatics, Keio University, Japan ”For the fabrication of highly original nanostructures and for the discovery of important spin transport phenomena, including the spin-Seebeck effect and the inverse spin-Hall effect.”
Takashi Kimura Division of Electronics Materials and Devices, INAMORI Frontier Research Center, Kyushu University, Japan ”For the study of spin transport in lateral metallic spin valves, and the observation of the pure spin-current induced magnetization reversal and the reversible spin Hall effect. ”
The prizes will be awarded during the opening session on Monday morning followed by the Magnetism Award and Néel Medal lecture, the Young Scientist Award lecture will be given on Monday afternoon.
